Well kind of... I cut down a small tree last summer growing too near my house. The stump will not die! It is some kind of very fast growing tree and it sends up dozens of shoots every week. I want it DEAD! DEAD I tell you DEAD!!!

I drilled holes in it and filled them with salt. Nothing.
Anyome have any sure fire (short of fire it's near my house and the gas meter) ways to kill it?

Thnx

I can't say for certainty, but I have been told copper kills em dead. as in copper nails. I do know it is poison to most plants. Drive a copper spike or two in it and see. Of course theres always full strenght roundup poured right on the top of a fresh cut.

I'll go with MichaelP on this one, that sounds like it would kill most anything

PS. Although if you have ever been to Odessa, you will know that no one there has much experience with trees, they barely exist.

Hmmm? Maybe now we know why...

So where does one find muratic acid and is it dangerous?

Pool supply store, and yes! Just don't get any on ya! Not much worse than bleach, though.

It's great for removing rust too, but you have to neutralize, using baking soda, or it will make things even worse!

I've used muriatic acid for years on the fireplaces I build. If Used straight be careful, the smoke and fumes are deadly.Good luck Destroying that pest!DaveAndy38879.3836689815

Ron! Do not mix the chlorine and muratic acid!!!!

Gives off a pretty potent gas!! Bad for lungs! Should be warnings on the labels!

Thnx Billy I won't. FYI the chlorine doesn't seem to be doing much. Just filled the holes again today. If no affect by tomorrow then I'll go buy some acid.

Hey Ronn, have you thought of dynomite?

I'm sure it would get rid of the stump, but unfortunatly, it would get rid of most everything else around it.

You said it was small. Why not just dig it out? No deadly chemicals, good exercise.......

If you try Roundup, or better yet spray or paint with a woody brush killer containing triclopyr or ammonium sulphamate (Amcide) , don't use full strength. If left undiluted, it won't get sucked into the vascular system.

What ever you use to poison it, be careful that it isn't a sucker that shares it root system with another nearby tree that you want to keep.

One thing I use on small stumps is a floor jack. Dig under enough to get the pad in good contact, and pop it out like a weed.

Hmm, I'll go with Rod on this one, go with the dynamite, sure it's dangerous, loud and destructive, but it's a heck of a lot of fun and very effective

How can dangerous, loud and destructive, not, be a heck of a lot of fun?

And it's near the house and gas meter! Wow! More fun than a barrel of vikings! Billy T38885.2650694444

I blasted a stump in my back yard when I lived in Union City Ca. It was Superbowl Sunday, and I waited for a touchdown then fire in the hole!!! No one noticed ......except for my wife. That's been over 20 years ago, and I still hear about it from time to time.

Ok here's the update. I drilled 1" holes in to it, all over. I tried Salt, Pool Chlorine, Round up and Dirty looks... It's still there.

I'll try the acid as soon as I get some. Been to the pool store twice and keep forgeting.

Woody brush killer sounds promising and maybe total vegitation killer... Paraquat, agent orange...

It's all my fault. I let this thing get started. Don't know what I was thinkin'. Anyway it's about 10" in diameter and right in the corner at the junction of two sidewalks. Below it is of course the gas lines and also the irrigation water pipes so digging it out will be a bit tricky.

Anyway thanks for the help. I'll let you know what finally kills it.
